This season has been a series of cascading disasters for the Mets, and they signaled the end of contention hopes this season when they traded Lucas Duda to the Rays. So who’s next? Late-inning stopper Addison Reed is a free agent-to-be and would be a bullpen boost to any contender. Outfielders Curtis Granderson and Jay Bruce are both free agents after this season, too, and though they won’t bring back blue-chip prospects, they could help with a playoff push. Infielder Asdrubal Cabrera and lefty reliever Jerry Blevins have options for 2018, so the Mets don’t have to move them, but both could bring back decent returns.
Pat Neshek is a veteran right-hander having a great season for the Phillies (1.17 ERA), and he’s a free agent after the season, which means he’s getting traded at some point soon. The Marlins are in a trading mood, too, and they have a couple right-handers who could help the Cubs down the stretch. A.J. Ramos has been Miami’s reliable closer the past couple seasons and is under club control for one more year, his final season of arbitration, before he becomes a free agent. Kyle Barraclough isn’t as well known, but he has a career 12.2 K/9 ratio and 2.93 FIP, plus he’s under club control through 2021.
Their relationship goes back more than a decade, which says something about two guys who are just 24 years old. They battled as junior golfers, and at rival colleges, and each could hold their share of bragging rights.
